Elmhurst Animal Care Center - Salt Creek to Riverside Drive

The Potawatomi peoples were the first humans known to settle in the region which became Elmhurst, Illinois.  Salt Creek provided fresh water, and there were numerous treeless meadows to accommodate the longhouses the tribe lived in for the summer months, and the wigwams built for warmth during the winter.  The Potawatomi were originally native to the woodlands of Michigan, but as Europeans encroached further and further into the Midwest of the continent, the Potawatomi and other tribes moved westward into the modern day areas of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Minnesota.  In 1836 European immigrants settled on Salt Creek in the area now known as the Elmhurst Centre, well known today to the veterinarians and assistants of the Elmhurst Animal Care Center on South Riverside Drive.

The village, called Cottage Hill, grew slowly, but got a boost in 1849 when the Galena and Chicago Union Railway made its right of way through the town, giving farmers access to Chicago and westbound travelers from Chicago access to the wide spaces of northern Illinois.  Cottage Hill became Elmhurst in 1869, followed swiftly by the establishment of Elmhurst College in 1871, but incorporation as a village took another 10 years, in 1882 when the population was around a thousand souls.  Elmhurst Animal Care Center now does business in the birthplace of Keebler Company, and the home of Sunshine Biscuits, McMaster-Carr Supply and the distribution center for Famous Amos cookies.

Elmhurst is a suburb city of Chicago, Illinois, straddling DuPage and Cook Counties.  The estimated population for Elmhurst in 2012 was over 45,000 citizens.  Elmhurst is an upscale community, with an average family income of $88,000.  A city which acts as the home of the many professionals who work in the high rises of Chicago, the families of Elmhurst enjoy the perks of American suburban life:  upper middle class homes with all the amenities, an average of 2.8 children, parks, schools, churches and, of course, pets.  Elmhurst Animal Care Center has positioned itself to be the go-to animal care clinic for the family pets of Elmhurst and surrounding suburbs.
